Joan Miro silkscreen on canvas "El Sol" | Mural Scrolls 1949
Joan Miro silkscreen for the rare 1949 Mural Scrolls project

$1,000.00

Item Code: 3044

Description

Medium: silkscreen on canvas. A nice impression printed on actual canvas, for the 1949 "Mural Scrolls" portfolio, published in New York. The sheet measures 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches (216 x 318mm). Not signed (this impression is stamped with the "mS" Mural Scrolls publisher's stamp).

Historical note: this screenprint was issued in order to promote the sale of a large mural by Miro, that would have been an astonishing 4 x 6 feet in size, also printed on canvas; an edition of 200 was planned for the full-size murals but it remains unclear if any were ever released. This smaller-size version that we offer here is now quite rare. The other artists who collaborated in this project were Roberto Sebastian Matta, Alexander Calder and Henri Matisse.

Condition: some of the light blue background color has either been unevenly applied, or there has been some rubbing. There is old glue residue on back of the sheet at top, where it had once been mounted by the publisher onto a burlap board; the burlap has not been preserved.
