Medium: original lithograph. Printed in Paris by Mourlot and published by Pierre à Feu and Maeght Editeur for the Marcel Duchamp / André Breton project Surréalisme en 1947. Issued in a limited edition of 999. Size: 9 1/8 x 7 7/8 inches (232 x 200 mm). Signed in the stone, not by hand.
Medium: pochoir. A rich impression on wove paper with bold, strong color, this whimsical Max Ernst pochoir was executed for Cahiers d'Art in 1949, published in Paris by Christian Zervos. Sheet size: 12 1/4 x 9 inches; 315 x 225 mm. Signed in the plate (in text); not hand-signed.
Condition: the sheet has been trimmed.
Cahiers d'Art was published in Paris from 1926-1960 by Greek art collector, writer and art critic Christian Zervos. From a print collector's viewpoint, this art revue is most famous for the pochoirs which were commissioned for some of the issues. Zervos had high technical standards, and these works are stunning.
Medium: original color lithograph. Catalogue reference: M 689. Executed in 1973 for the "The Biblical Message of Marc Chagall" and printed in Paris by Mourlot on wove paper. Size: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches; 320 x 240 mm. Not signed.
Medium: original etching. Catalogue reference: Asplund 185. This is a good impression with plate tone, on watermarked laid paper from the edition of only 200 printed in 1905 for Schubert-Soldern's ”Das radierte Werk des Anders Zorn”. The etched inscription beneath the portrait reads “Gärdi onums weiser wen an wilda” (His works show his will). Plate size: 6 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches (157 x 121 mm); the total sheet measures 9 3/4 x 5 1/8 inches (245 x 130 mm). Signed by Anders Zorn in the plate (not by hand).
Condition: the margins are narrow on the right and left sides. Rare.
Medium: chromolithograph (after the watercolor). This beautiful antique print was published in a small edition (most likely around 500) in 1895 to illustrate a rare Celia Thaxter volume. Celia Thaxter and Childe Hassam were close friends, and some of his loveliest compositions were of her Isle of Shoals garden. Signed in the plate (not by hand). Image size: 5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches.
This is a rich impression on cream wove paper; although there is minor age-toning and foxing to the margins, the colors remain vivid and fresh.
Medium: original woodcut. This bold and striking Expressionist woodcut was published in 1920 for Genius. Image size: 9 1/2 x 7 inches (240 x 180 mm) on wove paper with full margins. This original Rouveyre print is from GENIUS: Zeitschrift fur Werdende und Alte Kunst. This art and literary project only lasted three years, but had incredible influence on German art and culture between the Wars. Some of the important artists contributing original prints included: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Richard Seewald, Franz Marc, Erich Heckel, Frans Masereel, Max Kaus, Karl Hofer, Alexander Archipenko, and others. This was a major vehicle for the German Expressionists. Signed in the block, not by hand.
Condition: minor age-toning and a printer's crease and a few spots in the margin (probably ink from printing).
Medium: pochoir (after the painting) for Georges Rouault's magnificent "Visages" portfolio, beautifully printed in 1969 by Daniel Jacomet on Chiffon de Mandeure wove paper in an edition of 450. The image size is 9 x 6 3/4 inches (225 x 170 mm) and the total sheet measures 18 x 13 inches (455 x 335 mm). Not signed.
Medium: pochoir (after the oil on paper). Issued in 1965 in an edition of 1200 for the rare exhibition catalogue "Miro Cartones 1959-1965", published by the Pierre Matisse Gallery. This is an exquisite, richly inked impression printed in Paris by Ateliers Daniel Jacomet. Sheet size: 12 1/4 x 8 5/8 inches (315 x 220 mm). Signed by Miro in the plate (not by hand).
Medium: line etching (after the drawing). This fascinating Vasarely was printed on a special semi-transparent paper and issued in an edition of 450 for the "Naissances" project, published in 1963 by Galerie Der Spiegel. The total sheet size is 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches (300 x 210 mm). Not signed.
Medium: pochoir (after the watercolor). Printed in Paris in 1920 in a limited edition of 1100. This impression is on wove paper, tipped (attached along the top edge) by the publisher onto a support sheet. The image measures 5 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches (145 x 110 mm). Not signed.
