Miro lithographs, pochoirs, woodcuts, etchings >> more
Joan Miró (1893-1983) was born in Spain and was drawn to the Parisian art scene as a young man. Throughout his long career, his art was a bridge between the figurative and the abstract. Although considered a Surrealist and closely associated with André Breton, Miró rejected formal membership in the group, not wanting to limit himself artistically. Highly prolific, Miró was a gifted painter and sculptor, and in later years worked in ceramics and stained glass. Here we celebrate Miró as a printmaker. From the 1930's onward, he began producing exceptional pochoirs, lithographs and etchings, and the pace accelerated in the 1960's, at the urging of Aimé Maeght.

Chagall lithographs and etchings >> more
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born in Russia near Vitebsk (in what is now Belarus). Emigration was a constant in his life, and he found his way to Paris as a young man to avoid Tsarist Antisemitism, returned briefly to Moscow after the Revolution but was disenchanted with the Soviet system, and re-settled in Paris. He fled to New York in 1941 to escape the Nazi Occupation, and later moved back to Europe. Chagall's art doesn't fit neatly into any one category; he developed his own Modern style and was closely associated with the School of Paris. Highly symbolic and immediately recognizable, his work celebrates village life and Jewish tradition, with scenes of lovers, the circus and Biblical themes frequently making their appearance. A gifted painter and etcher (and also known for his murals and stained glass), Chagall is perhaps most highly acclaimed for his color lithographs.

Picasso lithographs, pochoirs, prints >> more
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is certainly one of the giants of Modern Art. Born in Spain, he made his way to Paris and was instrumental in founding the Cubist movement. However, his art was in constant evolution, and he experimented with almost every medium imaginable. Hugely prolific in the graphic arts, Picasso's prints form a body of work which will be studied and collected for years to come.

School of Paris Art >> more
The School of Paris (École de Paris) was a rather broad category and included Modern Artists of various styles (many of whom were foreign-born) who lived and worked in Paris in the early and middle years of the 20th Century. Paris was long considered to be the world's great laboratory of Modern Art, even with the emergence of New York as a rival center. Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall were among the most illustrious of these, but on this website we have special sections for Chagall and Picasso prints. Other Modern Masters of the graphic arts are represented here, such as Jean Dubuffet, Nicholas de Stael, Serge Poliakoff, Bernard Buffet, Hans Hartung, Bram van Velde, Henri Michaux, Alfred Manessier, Marcel Vertes, Jean Cocteau, Louis Icart, Jean Fautrier, Pierre Soulages, Vieira da Silva, Charles Lapicque, Pierre Tal-Coat, Zao Wou-ki and many others. Note: to view the complete selection of works by Chagall and Picasso, please click on the index at left.
AffordableArt101 would like to pay homage to several of the leading publishers and printers who made it all possible: Christian Zervos founded the journal Cahiers d'Art in 1926, and in addition to being a treasury of information, is the source of several rare and beautiful pochoir prints. Gualtieri di San Lazzaro founded the journal XXe Siecle (Chroniques du Jour) in 1938, which served as a wealth of scholarship and a source of lithographs, pochoirs and linocuts and continued for decades. Tériade founded Verve in 1937, which published some of the most beautiful lithographs of the era. Aimé Maeght started Derričre le Miroir in 1946, and this publication continued until 1983, featuring original lithographs by many of the most important printmakers working in Paris during that time. Maeght died in 1981, and an era ended. Daniel Jacomet was master of the pochoir techinque. A pochoir (stencil print) is an old fashioned but beautiful medium producing rich, vibrant colors and bold geometric shapes, resembling a silkscreen. However, of all the Master Printers who worked with the artists and their publishers, none are so renown as Mourlot Frčres (the Mourlot Brothers), and especially one brother in particular, Fernand Mourlot. Working with Tériade, Maeght, Sauret and others, he was the bridge between the concept of art and its realization on paper. It was especially through the labor and skill of the Mourlot atelier that the lithograph came back into fashion, and indeed has become the pre-eminent print medium of our era.
