Josef Albers Homage to the Square

Homage to the Square is Josef Albers' best known and most iconic theme. The artist began exploring relationships between squares of different sizes and colors in 1949. In addition to Josef Albers Homage to the Square paintings on various materials including Masonite, the series included a number of lithographs and serigraphs.

Set of six lithographs (after the original lithographs). Printed in 1966 by Blair Litho and published by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for a now very scarce exhibition catalog; this particular variation of Josef Albers' Homage to the Square series is called "White Line Squares". Image size: 6 x 6 inches each (153 x 153 mm); the sheet size varies somewhat and is 7 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches for most. Not signed.

Condition: the blue composition has a slightly narrower left margin; and there is a small blemish in the margin of the black composition near the bottom left.

Josef Albers started to explore his Homage to the Square theme in 1949. Constructed on precise mathematical formulae, there is a meditative quality to these simple yet powerful works, and they are among the most easily recognized icons of modern art.
