Item Code: 7396

Medium: mezzotint (engraved by Clifford James after the famous Whistler painting). "The Little White Girl" is also known as "Symphony in White No. 2". This is a portrait of Joanna Hiffernan, the beautiful Irish model who was Whistler's mistress from 1860-66. Signed in pencil by the engraver Clifford James, this exquisite mezzotint was printed and published in 1922, after which the plate was destroyed. The image size is 18 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches and the plate size is 19 5/8 x 12 7/8 inches. The sheet measures 22 x 14 1/2 inches.

Condition: the outer margins have been trimmed slightly, not affecting the image. Also, there is aging and discoloration where the old mat had lain (partially inside the platemark) and two spots on the model's dress.
