Medium: etching with engraving and mezzotint. Catalogue reference: Finberg 69 ii/iv. This is the rare second state of four. Published in London in 1819 for the Liber Studiorum (Plate 69). Drawn and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Thomas Lupton. Size: 8 1/8 x 11 3/8 inches (plate) with full margins (208 x 288mm); there is some foxing and a mat stain, with old tape and two repaired tears in the margin. Previous collector's pencil annotations can be seen on the back in the margin, indicating that at one time it was part of an English Lord's collection. A magnificent, rich impression on laid paper, which according to the noted scholar on Turner's work William George Rawlinson, is the "Second State: Two dots at right lower corner in margin. Rare."
Turner intended the highly ambitious Liber Studiorum to be a body of his life's work, with Romantic scenes from the British Isles and Continental Europe. One of his few Scottish subjects, Ben Arthur is considered one of Turner's finest landscapes and has been called the rarest of all the Liber Studiorum etchings. Impressions of this print are seldom found on the market, especially in this state.
