Medium: original etching. Catalogue reference Lister 1. This charming pastoral landscape was the first Samuel Palmer etching, executed in 1850 in order to qualify Palmer for admission into The Etching Club. However, it was not published until after his death, with this impression on cream wove paper being published in London in 1892 by the artist's son as the frontispiece for "The Life and Letters of Samuel Palmer, Painter and Etcher". The image measures 3 1/2 x 2 5/8 inches (90 x 67mm); the plate size is 4 5/8 x 3 1/4 inches (118 x 80mm) and the full sheet is 9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches (235 x 162mm). Signed in the plate, not by hand. A lucky find!
