Max Ernst Art for Sale -- Max Ernst Lithographs and Prints

Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a German artist who was very influential in the Surrealist art movement. He was friends with Dada artists Jean (Hans) Arp and Marcel Duchamp, and worked with Paul Eluard, Joan Miro, Alberto Giacometti and would later marry Surrealist painter and printmaker Dorothea Tanning. In 1925 Max Ernst invented a graphic art technique called "frottage", employing pencil rubbings of objects, related to another similar technique he invented called "grattage" in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath. In New York he contributed to the development of Abstract Expressionism. In his later years he was a prolific lithographer. From a print collector's perspective, Max Ernst was active in Paris during the middle decades of the 20th Century, working closely with Master Printer Fernand Mourlot, as well as publishers Christian Zervos (Cahiers d'Art) and Gualtieri di San Lazzaro (founder of the journal XXe Siecle -- Chroniques du Jour). Here we are pleased to present a selection of original Max Ernst lithographs and pochoirs.
