Josef Albers Homage to the Square

Homage to the Square is Josef Albers' best known and most iconic theme. The artist began exploring relationships between squares of different sizes and colors in 1949. In addition to Josef Albers Homage to the Square paintings on various materials including Masonite, the series included a number of lithographs and serigraphs.

Not signed. Image size: 8 x 8 inches (205 x 205 mm). Including the border, the full sheet size: 8 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches (225 x 225 mm).

Condition: there is minor wear to the surface near the bottom left.

A rich impression in electric color. Not signed.

Josef Albers started to explore his Homage to the Square theme in 1949. Constructed on precise mathematical formulae, there is a meditative quality to these simple yet powerful works, and they are among the most easily recognized icons of modern art.

Medium: serigraph / silkscreen. Published in 1964 by Galerie Denise Rene, of Paris, for the rare exhibition catalogue "Hard Edge". Josef Albers was one of several artists who contributed original silkscreens for this project (after their own paintings). It was printed by the Imprimerie Mazarine on a sheet of thin wove paper without margins, and then tipped onto a support sheet (attached along the top edge). Image size: 7 x 7 inches (190 x 190mm).
