Description

Medium: original pochoir. Catalogue reference: Dupin 17. Printed in Paris by Imprimerie Moderne on watermarked wove paper and published as a special insert for the very rare Cahiers d'Art issue No. 4-5 in 1937. Signed in the plate (not signed by hand). Image size: 9 3/4 x 7 7/16 inches (247 x 190mm); the total sheet measures 12 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches (315 x 235mm).

Translated, the inscription reads, "In the current conflict on the Fascist side I see massive forces, and on the other side are the people whose immense and creative resourcefulness will give Spain a vitality which will astonish the world."  Executed in 1937 to protest fascism and rally support for the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War; Miro was not generally considered a "political artist" and this was an unusual act for a cause dear to him. This design was actually intended to be used as a French postage stamp, which would be sold for 1 Franc to raise money for the Spanish Republican cause.

Condition: the left edge of the sheet has been slightly trimmed. Otherwise, in fine condition with strong, rich unfaded colors. One of Miro's most famous and important works.
