Alexander Calder Works of Art

U.S. born Alexander Calder is a highly prominent artist now, though Calder’s mobiles, sculptures and artwork weren’t always regarded as such. Alexander Calder had a very mobile life – moving around from Pennsylvania, New Jersey to the seas off Guatemala to finally Paris where he worked with influential artists like Joan Miró and Jean Arp, among others.

Calder was mostly recognized for his structures and mobiles, which were exhibited in a few public commissions in the mid- 1900s. Artist Calder also had impressive skill in painting and printmaking, with a large focus on abstract paintings and themes.

Alexander Calder silkscreen on canvas "A Piece of my Workshop" | Mural Scrolls 1949
$850.00
Alexander Calder silkscreen for the rare 1949 Mural Scrolls project
Medium: silkscreen on canvas. A nice impression printed on actual canvas, for the 1949 "Mural Scrolls" portfolio, published in New York. The sheet measures 10 x 15 1/4 inches (255 x 385mm). Signed by Calder in the plate (not by hand).

Historical note: this screenprint was issued in order to promote the sale of a large mural by Alexander Calder, that would have been an astonishing 6 x 10 feet in size, also printed on canvas; an edition of 200 was planned for the full-size murals but it remains unclear if any were ever released. This smaller-size version that we offer here is now quite rare. The other artists who collaborated in this project were Roberto Sebastian Matta, Joan Miro and Henri Matisse.

Condition: there are handling creases and some light soiling to the surface of the canvas. There is old glue residue on back of the sheet at top, where it had once been mounted by the publisher onto a burlap board; the burlap has not been preserved.
